Today football is the most watched and the most popular sports game in the world. It is a relatively young sport if we take into consideration that it began at the beginning of the last century, but it soon became very popular. The legendary words written by a known writer and humorist from Split, Miljenko Smoje and said by another famous person in a cult series are: “Who ever saw running after a bladder, I could understand if you run after a girl …” It is obvious that the opponents of this game were wrong.

Today you shouldn’t even pronounce these words in front of the most of male population, especially if it is a Dalmatian man. Men in Dalmatia are traditionally very sensitive, apart on their women (who they regard as the most beautiful in the whole world), on football, and their local club “Hajduk” is almost a religion.

Besides, Dalmatian women are also equally fierce fans and certainly refute prejudice that football is a men’s game. They also refute the stereotype that women don’t know the definition of offside!

The story of the football club “Hajduk” started in 1911 when it was founded by young, enthusiastic students from Prague; Fabjan Kaliterna, Lucijan Stella, Ivan Šakić and Vjekoslav Ivanišević (Vladimir Šora was not mentioned in all sources). It was named after the hajduks, rebelled outlaws who were romanticised in Croatian popular poetry. Although it existed in four countries and had a stormy history in different circumstances and difficulties the club has never changed its name.

Its first historical match HNK Hajduk played against the Italian club “Calcia”, by winning 9:0. For its national and European results Hajduk is undoubtedly the most successful Croatian team. There are 17 Championships and 13 National Cups behind it.

“Always true to their Hajduk” are its stout-hearted fans Torcida.

Although lately the “love” between them and the club’s management, and the players is not flourishing, the white colour – club’s symbol and Hajduk are still their most sacred things.
