The City Museum was founded in 1946 in Split. It is located in the north east part of the Diocletian’s palace, in medieval buildings’ complex in the middle of which the late gothic palace of the family Papalić is situated, the project and work of domestic master Juraj Dalmatinac but also the meeting place of the renaissance literary circle from Split led by Marko Marulić. This building houses the City Museum guarding the works of art and documentation which is important for the study of town’s development. The most valuable exhibits of the museum are pre-Romanic biforas, Romanic sculptures from the church-tower, old city blazons, arms and money. Town’s statute from the 14th century has a special value. A fragment from the town’s history dating from the period of autonomous town’s commune (12th-14th centuries), is also exhibited. After a thorough restoration within the Museum that has lasted for years, an important place in restored Museum exhibition was given to the collections of town’s civil culture from the last two centuries. Within the Museum, since 2002 there has been opened a new gallery space housing exhibitions of different contents. In that complex a painting gallery of Emanuel Vidović, the most prominent artist from Split of the 20th century who was the ancestor of Croatian modern art, has also been formed. The Museum gives exhibitions not only in Split but also in other towns all over Croatia and in foreign museum institutions as well as in other cultural institutions.
