In Scientific Museum there are collections of birds, turtles, sea vertebrates, invertebrates and similar. It is a permanent exhibition of Malacological collection “Bakotić” which was donated by the homonymous family to the town of Split after 20 years of collecting and research. There are around 1 000 exhibits from the Adriatic and 2 000 from other world seas. Within the museum there is a small ZOO on Marjan with different animals. Besides, people started keeping animals in captivity in ZOO-parks more than 3000 years ago when Chinese rulers built an enormous garden called “The Gardens of Reason”. Defenders of ZOO parks claim that these parks give people a chance to get close to animals, but animals in these habitats don’t behave normally and they are stressed. In badly managed parks, like the Split one, they are often exposed to cold, dirt and illnesses, and are probably inadequately fed. ZOO park in Split is in desperate need for improvement of sanitary conditions and if you are an animal rights’ defender we wouldn’t recommend this visit.
