Museum of Croatian Archaeological Monuments

Museum of Croatian Archaeological Monuments was founded in Knin in 1893. After the 2nd World War it was moved to Split, and from 1967 it’s been located in today’s building situated in the neighbourhood. Meje at the bottom of Marjan. Eminent Croatian archaeologist and long time manager of CAM Stjepan Gunjača is mostly meritorious for today’s constitution and organization of the museum and for the building’s maintenance. Therefore, in his honour, the street where the museum is situated got his name.

Museum has the unique assignment to collect, present and study the remains of the old Croatian material and spiritual culture from the 7th to the 15th century with the emphasis on the period of early medieval Croatian state from the 9th to the 12th century. Extremely important monuments from that time are epigraphic monuments with names of Croatian rulers and dignitaries of those times.

Almost all of them are decorated with numerous and different combinations of wicker ornament characteristic of domestic masters of wicker ornamentation. Apart from these early medieval stone monuments the museum also has large collections of arms, tools, coins, jewellery and everyday items.

Around the museum you can see three basic types of pre Romanic churches from old Croatian times. Moreover, only 25% of the materials of the old Croatian archaeological heritage that the museum has at its disposal are exhibited on its usual exhibition, since its fond contains more than 20 000 monumental items. All in all, the complete materials the museum has at its disposal are extremely important for the studies of economic, cultural and political life of the Croatian nation through the history.
