Art Gallery is an extraordinary national and cultural value. Its fund counts over 3 200 works (paintings, sculptures, drawings, graphics, tapestries,…) It was founded in 1931 and at the end of the last century it got its own domicile premises in the building located in front of the northern wall of the Diocletian’s Palace. The ones who initiated the foundation of this institution and its main originators were the famous Croatian archaeologist don Frane Bulić, the greatest Split painter of the 20th century Emanuel Vidović and Ivo Tartaglia, long time major of Split. Collections owned by the Gallery are divided in old and new materials. Valuable works of art from the 14th century till now are exhibited. It sometimes houses modern authors’ exhibitions. Especially important works in artistic sense are the works of Andrija Aleši and Jurij Culinović from the 15th century, of Matej Pončun from the 17th century, and works of the Venetian gothic, renaissance and baroque masters. Especially rich is the collection of Dalmatian artists in Croatia from the 19th century. Exhibited works of art from the period of Croatian modernism are almost invaluable. There is a collection of the “Great Masters” of national creative work like; paintings of Vlaho Bukovac, Celestin Medović and Emanuel Vidović, sculptures of Ivan Rendić, Ivan Meštrović and Branimir Dešković. A specific quality of the Gallery’s fund is the width of its spectrum, and it is the result of the lack of museum infrastructure on the city level. In the last years it acted in function of the picture gallery and the museum of modern and contemporary art. For its importance and activities the gallery presents one of the key cultural institutions in Split and an important institution of this kind in Croatian borders.
