An island of picturesque landscapes, hidden beaches and a fully-fledged bar scene that’s had it tipped as “the new Ibiza”, Hvar is the hottest island on Croatia’s coastal backpackers’ trail. Luckily, this means you’re spoiled for choice when it comes to budget accommodation. The key to booking a Hvar hostel is not to be too hasty – which is easier said then done. As soon as you hop off the hydrofoil, expect to be greeted with mutterings of “zimmer, chamber, sleeping, sobe” as locals try to rent you out a room (often at a premium price). Rather than jumping at the first offer, it’s best to do your research in advance: check out HostelBookers’ recommendations for the best bargain hostels Hvar has to offer… ![]() A modern, luxuriously decked-out hostel just four minutes from the centre of Hvar Town and its buzziest bar Carpe Diem, Hostel Villa Skansi suits any budget by letting you choose between sleeping in a private room, apartment or a dorm. With a fun and laid-back atmosphere and plenty of home-brewed wine on tap, the hostel plays host to backpackers from all over (as well as the occasional star from CSI: NY, according to the owners!). The best way to get into the flow here? Chill out on the majestic white stone and Italian marble terrace and enjoy a cocktail while you take in views of the bay…

Hop across the bay to lounge on the Pakleni islands’ sandier beaches - Palmizana is the most popular.
Found in the village Gdinj with lavender fields, olive groves and vineyards rolling out around it, Phara Hostel couldn’t have prettier surroundings. Inside, there are seven small, cosy dorms (none sleep more than four), and you can get delicious Mediterranean food at converted farmhouse Duga Grill a short stroll away. Use the hostel as a jumping-off point for exploring Hvar’s great outdoors, from cycling to hiking, sea fishing to cave exploration and from diving to bowling, local-style.
Only five minutes from the centre of Hvar Town, The Green Lizard is one of the most relaxed, sociable places for backpackers to stay on the island. It’s got a garden with an outdoor kitchen and BBQ, free Wi-Fi and a lovely terrace view of the bay, where folks lounge in the evenings to watch the sun set and drink local brew Karlovacko. The young owners are sisters who’ll help you find the best beaches and nightlife Hvar has to offer, and there are regular social events like cocktail nights to help you meet fellow travellers. |
