Knightly game Alka Sinj

Under the medieval fortress between mountains of Dinara, Kamešnica and Svilaja, 35 km from Split, the town of Sinj is situated. Every year, since 1715 a knightly game “Alka“ is organized in memory of the victory of the people from Cetina area over the Turks. This game is a rarity of ethnological heritage.

On the first Sunday in August alkars (competitors) and their boys wearing colourful national costumes and armed with old fashioned arms compete riding their horses in gallop and trying to hit the iron circle (alka) with a spear. The whole region celebrates that day no matter who wins because the winner is obliged to share his prize with his townsmen. This is really a special event.
